My Mother, Eva Stern
In 1910 at age 21 my mother, Eva Stern arrived in New York from India to be reunited with her mother, Ethel Stern and her sister and brother-in-law, Louis and Bertha Friedman. Her family had come from Odessa, Russia but she, though born in Russia, had lived with relatives near Bombay since the age of 7, and had gone through high school there. After working in New York for several years she married my father, James Pastor (Pasternack) and lived in Woodbine, New Jersey. James and his father, Abraham, had arrived in Woodbine among the first settlers of this Jewish town, one of several funded by the Baron de Hirsch. They were joined by his mother, Nessa with eight younger children who arrived in Philadelphia in 1893 on the SS Gough from Liverpool. My two brothers and I grew up in Woodbine. If anyone reads this and finds it familiar I should like to hear from you.
