My grandmother's sisters fled the Ukraine around 1919 to Kishinev, Romania. One sister, Dunia Rosenberg was about 15 years old. According to my Great-Uncle Hy, he fell in love with her at first glance. He was about 19. Dunya said that her eldest sister, my grandmother Rachel and with her husband, Moishe and baby (my father) will still in the Ukraine, and if Hy would sneak back in and rescue them, bring them out, she would marry him. Hy was at risk of arrest which was why he ran away in the first place. He had already escaped from being imprisoned once. However, he went back into the Ukraine and traveled 315 some miles round trip over rivers and mountains to bring my grandparents and my father out. Dunie and Hy were married. When Hy made a video memoir in his 90's after her death, his face lit up as he told the story of meeting Dunie for the first time and how beautiful she was.
