Philip Sartorius
My great-grandfather, Philip Sartorius, was a private in the 14th Louisiana Cavalry. He was the first Confederate soldier wounded in the Vicksburg campaign. He came to Mississippi in 1845 from Germersheim am Rhein, in the Palatinate in Germany. In 1862 during the heat of the Vicksburg battle, a slave woman delivered my grandfather, Assar. Philip Sartorius was an active member of Anshe Chesed Temple, one of the first Reform Temples in the United States. The picture included is of Philip and his wife Sophie Rose Sartorius at their 50th wedding anniversary.
