A Soldier Remembered

This month, in recognition of Yom Hazikaron (Israel’s Memorial Day) and Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day), we at the Museum are honoring the memory of a Philadelphia native.

I am honored to have worked with Harriet and Mark Levin to install a special loan of artifacts on the Museum’s first floor: a beret and dogtags that belonged to their son Michael Levin, who, as a teenager, fulfilled his dream to make aliyah to Israel and serve as a paratrooper in the Israeli Defense Forces.

Levin portraitTruth be told, this was an installation I took more personally than most I work on. My family knew Michael well, and, like many Americans, we felt a personal loss when Michael died in battle six years ago at the age of 22.

May Michael’s sacrifice inspire all of us to pursue our dreams as we celebrate Israel’s independence. And may his memory be for a blessing.
