There are two events that come to mind. One is when I was about to lead a children's service in my synagogue. I was about ten years old and it was a Friday night service. The congregation in this particular synagogue numbered about two hundred people. It was a conservative shul. I had prepared, had been preparing for months, learning the Musaf and how to daven. I gave a little speech that night and said kiddush for the congregation. It was a pre bar mitzvah Bar Mitzvah for me. I felt that I was one with the congregation. I felt oneness with my Jewishness, congregation and family. It was a major event in my life ... Reb Nachman (of Breslav) has been a major spiritual guide. His writings and my Rosh Hashanah in Uman for the past seven years have become major transformations. Moving into a time capsule for about a week, introspection, being at Reb Nachman's grave and connecting with his soul. | ||
