ABOUT THE BOOK
| From the book, Day of Delight, A Jewish Sabbath in Ethiopia, by Maxine Rose Schur with pictures by Brian Pinkney. Author Schur offers an evocative look at a unique people - the Ethiopian Jews, or "Beta Israel." Her lyrical language and Brian Pinkney's striking scratchboard paintings combine to provide a vivid portrait of a way of life that has all but vanished. The full-color artwork was prepared using a scratchboard, a technique that requires a white board covered with black ink. The ink is then scraped off with a sharp tool to reveal the white, which is painted over with oil pastels, oil paints and gouache. These people are listening to the wise man read. They are concentrating very hard on the book. This picture shows me how important reading is. I hope everyone enjoys and learns from reading.

Aroma fills the air in the Ethiopian Jews' temple. I know a little about being in a place like this because I've been to a synagogue, but where I've been is much different from their temple. The lantern shines like a sun on the colorful cloths draped on the wall. People are crowding around the High Priest, listening to him reading prayers. There is a Sabbath candleholder with Stars of David on its sides, which show that even in Ethiopia, Jews have the same customs. The artist used scratchboard, which makes things look like you could touch them.
