Congregation Shaarai Shomayim,
also known as "The Gates of Heaven," was incorporated by the state of Alabama
in 1844. This second, neo-Romanesque synagogue building was designed by the
architectural firm Watkins, Hutchinson and Gavin in December 1905. The cornerstone
was laid on June 6, 1906, and the building was dedicated on June 21, 1907.
Unfortunately, this southeastern corner of Government and Warren streets
was turned into a used car lot in the mid 1950's. Congregation Shaarai Shomayim
is now also referred to as the Spring Hill Avenue Temple.
