Congregation B'nai Israel was founded
in Evansville in 1857. Also known as the Washington Avenue Temple, this building
was dedicated in 1904. The congregation's second building, it was used until
1980. A small fire and merger with another congregation moved the group,
now Congregation Adath B'nai Israel, further up Washington Avenue. At the
Sixth and Washington address today stands Patchwork Central, a Christian
Community Center and food pantry.
