Organized by the fourth oldest
Jewish community in the US (behind only New York, Philadelphia and Newport,
RI), Reform congregation Shaarai Shomayim's roots can be traced back to Joseph
Simon's arrival in Lancaster in 1741. The congregation still uses the cemetery
he purchased with Isaac Nuñes in February 1747. The synagogue building
seen here was built in 1896. Minor renovations in 1991 maintain the integrity
of the building's original appearance.
