Spanish and Portuguese congregation
Kahal Kadosh Mikveh Israel was founded in 1740. Its first synagogue at the
corner of 3rd and Cherry streets was built in 1782. The noted architect William
Strickland built a new structure on the same property in 1825. The third synagogue
for Mikveh Israel, seen here, was designed by John McArthur in 1859. The
Tebah, or Bimah, used in the first building is still used for services at
Mikveh Israel's fifth synagogue, located at 44 North 4th Street, one block
away from the Liberty Bell and Constitution Hall. The synagogue shares a building
with the National Museum of American Jewish History. Gift of Michael and
Maxine Kam.
