Temple B'nai Israel was built in
1923 by Henry Hornbostle. One of the first recast concrete structures built,
the round design symbolizes eternity and community. In order to accommodate
the ark on the east facing 'wall' of the building, which happened to be the
entrance from the main street, Hornbostle designed two ramps circling the
inside periphery of the sanctuary. A classroom building and social hall were
added in 1958. In 1993 B'nai Israel merged with two other congregations,
Adath Shalom and Beth Jacob. Today the building seen here is rented from
B'nai Israel by a charter school in Pittsburgh.
