Touro Synagogue: Newport, RI
The Touro Synagogue, oldest synagogue building in the United States, was dedicated on December 2, 1763. Influenced by the sentiments of the Spanish and Portuguese Orthodox congregation, architect Peter Harrison imported bricks from England in order to build a synagogue that resembled earlier buildings in Amsterdam and London. The Touro Synagogue was registered as a National Historic Site in 1946. The synagogue holds regular services and is open for tours. For more information, please visit www.tourosynagogue.org. Gift of Mrs. Meyer Klein.
